Colouring technique using Inktense

This was an interesting side project.  Tracey from Whirls and Swirls had a Sunday meeting set up in May/2025 in Oshawa.  I attended and met up with some other longarm quilters, that I haven't seen in a long while.  Oshawa is a bit far now that I live in Acton.  But every once in a while is all right.

This meeting was a technique of fabric colouring.  Tracey had pre-quilted all the designs on white fabric and we used them with Inktense and a medium to work the colour in and do blending.  When you first colour your design, the colour is very muted, very much like pastel colours.  Then when you brush on the medium the colours spark and become so vibrant.  Didn't look like the same thing at all!

I tried to do some blending of the colours, but as you can see, it was not very consistent.  Pretty good for my first time and if I were to do it again, I would try and do some blending ahead of time with the crayons first.  I think that would help with the consistency.

This piece is about 9" x 12" and I was able to finish all the colouring and applying the medium in the time of the meeting.  When I got home, all I had to do was apply the binding to finish off the piece.

These were the specific crayons that were used for the project.  You can get them on Amazon.

As I said, it was an interesting side project.  Would I do this again.....likely not, but I can see some applications for people who do art pieces with say mostly quilting and just need to add in a bit of highlights, or say a special block in a wall hanging that you want to stand out.  I'm sure there are other uses as well, but at the moment, I don't see a need for me.  That can change at a later date....  It was nice to try though.  And who doesn't like colouring.....lol.

Today I am having the ladies over to do some sewing.  Four out of five of use are going to be making the same quilt pattern, just like we did when we worked on the Heartfelt quilt.  I'm excited to finally get this one started.  We've been planning it almost since the time we finished making the Heartfelt quilt.  I'm hoping to get pictures of us working on this new quilt.  Just like the last quilt, everyone has chosen their colourway and none of them will be the same.  So exciting!!

Take care everyone.
